Retired soldier, I spent about 30 years in the military (USMC/Army). Also recently retired computer systems engineer. So, I'm just plain retired. I need something to do so, I decided on photography and bird watching as a hobby. Unless otherwise stated, all photographs I post are my own.

I take pictures and want to share them with you, so please follow my blog.

Woodland Climber

This red-bellied woodpecker seemingly defies gravity wand walks straight up a tree.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

"A female red-bellied woodpecker clings vertically to the side of a pale gray tree trunk, using sharp, curved claws to grip the bark with ease. The bird is positioned in profile, allowing an excellent view of the distinctive markings that make the species so recognizable. A vivid red patch stretches from the nape of the neck to the crown, contrasting beautifully with the soft tan face and creamy white throat. Unlike the male, the red does not extend all the way to the bill, leaving the forehead and face a muted buff color. The woodpecker's dark eye catches the light and appears alert as the bird angles its long, chisel-like bill upward, as though listening for movement beneath the bark. Black-and-white barred feathers cover the folded wings, creating a striking zebra-like pattern that stands out against the bird's pale underparts. A faint wash of warm orange-red can be seen along the lower belly and undertail area, hinting at the feature that gave the species its name. The background dissolves into a smooth blend of soft green and yellow circles of light, producing a dreamy, painterly backdrop that isolates the bird and draws attention to every feather. Warm sunlight illuminates the woodpecker from the front, revealing the fine texture of the plumage while leaving the background pleasantly blurred. The result is an intimate portrait that captures both the beauty and athleticism of this tree-climbing specialist." - Microsoft Copilot
