I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of @jared this month, from complications after heart surgery, at age 42. Jared was webmaster at ReadWriteWeb during its glory days; he was a much loved member of our team and a beautiful soul. In meinem kurzen Statement ging es heute mal weniger um Aufmerksamkeit für diverse digitale Archiv-Dienste bei uns an der @tibhannover , sondern darüber, dass autoritäre Regime gerne Archive beschneiden, um das (nationale) historische Narrativ zu kontrollieren.

Meine Frau sagt gerade, dass es im Chinesischen dafür eine Bezeichnung gebe: 黑暗料理, in etwa "Dunkle Küche" (wie in "Dunkle Künste"). Mettigel soll für manche wohl auch darunter fallen.

Most names are Chinese. Most people don’t have Gravatar because the site uses Gravatar for profile pictures and almost nobody has one.

Progress in AI is made in post-training these days. Programmers and mathematicians have worked largely in the open (and were also cheap to hire) so that their behaviors could be used to train the machine.

The next years of this industry will probably consist of getting biologists, lawyers, etc. to also go through this. Create many scenarios and record how human experts act in that scenario.

Love the can-do spirit here. I have to register mild dissent on the issue of IP (it's *good* that training is fair use, and I recommend not apologizing for that). But the important thing is that we can and must build our own intellectual infrastructure.

Der Account @muenchen ist bereits angelegt, bislang allerdings noch ohne Aktivität. Das sieht nach einer erfreulichen Entwicklung aus – und hoffentlich nach einem weiteren Schritt hin zu mehr digitaler Souveränität der öffentlichen Hand. 🙌

It's only been a year and a half since I signed up on mathstodon but I feel like back then there was more genuine innocent math chat on here. Like someone learning a new subject at the (under)graduate level and asking some basic questions about intuition or sharing their thoughts on what they find interesting.

Schade eigentlich dass es so viele Cafés mit Laptop verbot gibt aber ich kenn keins mit Handy verbot. Ich find es macht mehr Café Stimmung wenn die Leute am Laptop arbeiten als wenn sie dumm in ihr Telefon gucken
