something that really surprised me about the Netherlands is that mayors are not elected by the local citizens, but appointed by the national government

anyway, the Amsterdam news did a piece on how the youths have decided that Mamdani should be mayor of Amsterdam too

@0xabad1dea Candidate-mayors just apply to a job opening and the municipal council decides. “Appointed by national government” is the formality.
National government can theoretically decide not to install the municipality preference, but AFAIK that has never happened.
