@teajaygrey infinite respect for people who self-host their own email but I have zero interest in doing that. I'd rather associate my custom domain to a secure, encrypted email service and not worry about anything.

I self-host a lot of things but for example I decided to use #MagicPages for my Ghost blog and I am so grateful for Jannis' work. I don't have to stress about maintenance etc.

@BroBot90001 @tobias @TerryHancock @doncow sadly I think that AI code is pretty much everywhere now (look at Linux). My main problem with Proton is how the C-suite has created a toxic company culture, where legitimate concerns by software engineers are not acknowledged... on the contrary, there is bullying and name calling coming from the CEO. Unacceptable. I do not trust Proton anymore because they give more importance to AI than careful, handwritten code and want speed and scale at all costs

@teajaygrey I have read so many accounts of people struggling with self-hosting email - I think they compared this to a drug cartel - that I prefer to rely on paid email services and not have to worry about deliverability, server management, etc.

More "boring" service providers who are content with a modest profit margin and slow organic growth, please. I don't even care if the UI looks "dated" and new features take a long time to be built. Traditional boring bare metal, only add new customers when you have capacity to support it, whatever.

A company of 50+ year old tech veterans who have been laid off and left behind from age discrimination just looking to keep the bills paid until retirement.

Run it like a co-op, like a little credit union that isn't looking to expand quickly, just serve their little niche of the community.

@seanm "luckily" I created all my aliases inside ProtonMail - so they should last even after (if) I cancel my plan. It's a shame that SimpleLogin is owned by Proton, I don't know of any other good alternatives and I LOVED the Dark Web Monitoring, sigh

@waltbaldwin I know. Inadmissible. That's why I'm waiting to see if the board gives him and the CTO the boot. I don't see how the company can recover from this

@feed thank you for your brilliant reporting and for putting pressure on #Proton, by highlighting their toxic culture. The canceling of the AI "re-interviews" is a teeny tiny gesture but IMHO the only way for the company to restore some of its credibility would be to ask for the resignation of its CEO and CTO. The damage done has been catastrophic and I don't see any other way out (unless they both go). From your piece I could sense there are many great, conscientious engineers working there

@smilingdemon using your own domain name as your default email address may take away some of the pain (re: figuring out where to land next) because the transition is pretty much painless

@LeoRJorge it's really easy. Just buy a custom domain and then add it to your email provider. There are many video tutorials about how to change DNS settings, step-by-step

@TerryHancock I'm just using my domain name as my default email address so I can freely switch providers in just a few clicks (and DNS changes). I am not self-hosting my email, I heard it's like a cartel and I don't want to worry about deliverability rates, etc. Just using my custom domain so I can hop between different providers, that's all

@aerion it's a real nightmare, indeed. I moved to Proton 6 years ago in an effort to DeGooglify. This development has been really upsetting.

Honestly if they get rid of their CEO and the CTO I may stick around... it seems that engineers have their heart in the right place, putting an emphasis on hand-written code and caution.

Otherwise my paid plan lasts for another 6 months and I will slowly transition away from it.

My new approach vis-à-vis transitioning away from #Proton (in a slow way) - cont':

For every new email that comes in that uses one of my Proton email addresses (or aliases), I am making changes, updating the email address for that account (if it's shopping/newsletter/admin) or I am notifying the sender that going forward my default email address will be the one associated to my domain name.

It's a pain, but it's long overdue.

I'm devastated to hear that #Proton 's CEO and CTO are treating their engineers in a terrible way, blindly trusting LLMs and creating a toxic culture where speed and growth trump security.

I'm not ready to make a radical switch yet but some little actions I implemented today could be useful for others, too:
1) I made my custom domain the DEFAULT email address in ProtonMail
2) I created aliases w my custom domain for shopping, newsletters, admin, etc.

Hoping this will make a transition smoother
