@ambivalena Thanks, Lena! I like to find the more unusual interpretation of the words when possible. (And if I can poke fun at something I hate, that's always a benefit.)
@zachleat It's especially frustrating because Instrument Serif looks pretty clearly inspired by Apple Garamond, which I've always liked. Apple's 80s–90s branding will always be one of my favorites.
I still have no idea what these goons saw in that typographic style. It's not garish or authoritarian, which is the aesthetic I would have assumed they were looking for.
@megmac @AmeliaBR I think it depends what the software is built on. Native apps, definitely. Web apps—say, a locally hosted LAMP-stack app—could probably work pretty long-term, especially if you're avoiding libraries or dependencies.
I've built a few PHP/MySQL personal utilities in Codex, running locally. I have no plans to market them; I wouldn't even host them on the web behind a password. Modern web technologies being what they are, I don't typically need a fully native app for these things.
@AmeliaBR I think the difference is that with LLMs, you can build something that you own. You'd need to pay the AI to expand or maintain your app, but the app itself is yours.
I'd be uneasy if I had a business that relied on an AI subscription to keep developing the product (although open-weight models may change that). For personal tools, though, I do see LLMs as a chance to own again, not rent.
And honestly, I would not mourn the demise of SaaS. I've always thought that model was unethical.
@AmeliaBR It's odd how I rarely see this side of the issue discussed. A month ago, I saw someone on Reddit talking about how they built themselves an accessibility tool with Claude, replacing a professional solution that required a subscription.
There's much to criticize about AI-based development, but I think it's also becoming a sort of democratizing force that lets folks build tools that either aren't profitable enough to exist, or are inaccessible to some because they need to be profitable.

@loren Tailscale was the one I was considering. I wasn't crazy about having to have an account, but it sounded like it was easier to configure; was that not the case?
