I #Selfhost my email server (that handles my 20+ domains) since almost 20 years now, currently on a cheap virtual machine running Linux, with 1 CPU core, 2G of RAM, 40G hard drive and unlimited network traffic which costs me less than €5/month.

Many people keep on telling me that running your own email server is more or less impossible. I simply don't listen to them.

@jwildeboer @davidaugust @homelab But why? Why not just use Thunderbird & leave the heavy lifting to something like fastmail? I’m not poo-pooing it, I’m just curious what the motivation might be … because it sounds like too much ‘work’ “for me”. Kudos to you though.

@donhawkins My main reason was at the time "learning by doing". I prefer to understand the inner workings of stuff that define my daily (digital) life. Nowadays the main reason is "because I can and want to share it in ways that others can too", I guess :) And after the initial setup and config, it's not a lot of work to keep it working. So the €5/month is quite the bargain :) @davidaugust @homelab
