@donhawkins My main reason was at the time "learning by doing". I prefer to understand the inner workings of stuff that define my daily (digital) life. Nowadays the main reason is "because I can and want to share it in ways that others can too", I guess :) And after the initial setup and config, it's not a lot of work to keep it working. So the €5/month is quite the bargain :) @davidaugust @homelab

@momo I guess I was also lucky. It took me one e-mail 15 years ago to get allowlisted. It might have also helped that Telekom is a customer of Red Hat and they know me from that too ;) @homelab

@bbuk IP reputation is overrated, in my experience. Yes, some smaller mail servers still use weird blocklists that use IP ranges, but mostly, especially in times of IPv6, that doesn't make a lot of sense. The big mail providers use different signals nowadays, IP reputation doesn't play that big of a role anymore. @homelab

@bbuk It's even worse ;) It's a VM at OVH. And yes, it comes with both an IPv4 address and an IPv6 range where you can configure the reverse lookup hostname. @homelab

@FritzAdalis I am not sure if there is a shortlist of reasons. Maybe I'm just lucky. Maybe the spammers know that I have working ways to report them and decided to leave me alone — I don't really know. But I am not complaining :) @tommi @stalwartlabs

@blaisealleyne Interesting. I need to check my config, because I haven't run into that problem. Greylisting only kicks in for domains my mail server has never seen before. 2FA typically means the sending domain is well-known so I guess I was lucky. Switching it off completely is also an option, as most spammers sending from botnets don't care about a second try anyway, they just try with a different IP address. Reverse lookup stops that in its tracks. @knowprose @homelab

@jmhorner I think I did all of that in my blog post series. It is littered with warnings "Here will be dragons" and that is not a simple install-and-forget thing. That it needs commitment and the willingness to learn. But I also think that making the knowledge needed accessible instead of treating it as some secret knowledge is the only way forward. @trxxruraxvr @homelab

@andre Fein.

@andre But still, there are literally thousands of outdated Exchange mail servers out there that also JustWork™. Email is quite a robust ecosystem that doesn't change all that drastically. My setup is more or less unchanged since 4 years when I finally added DKIM and DMARC.

@mildsunrise I have never received complaints that my emails land in spam at Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, T-Online, GMX etc so I cannot tell you how to deal with that :)

@knowprose In my experience, spam simply isn't the big problem it was anymore. Greylisting and DNS reverse lookups on connecting IPs solve it almost completely. I have blocklist that I keep current for some of the notorious sender domains, but that list has become much shorter over the years. @homelab

And, as expected, the first replies by people saying that running your own email server isn't something you should do are coming in. As I said in my first post — I ignore them. I have 20 years of practical experience with that, I know what works for me and my users and they have never complained. But, as I also said, that is just me. I am not saying that everyone can or should do it. What I am saying is that it absolutely is possible and that I share what I know in the hope it helps.

@trxxruraxvr I use the postfix and dovecot versions from the operating system (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) and in my 20 years have never experienced updates breaking my setup. But I would also get an alarm from my monitoring setup latest after 15 minutes of my mail server not accepting connections for IMAP and/or SMTP :) @homelab
