My friend also mentioned a bit of veteran professional advice for the young ops team member some of you may need: The moment a lawyer who does not and cannot contribute anything starts - somehow, mysteriously - joining your incident calls, they're there specifically and only so that conversation is sheltered from regulatory scrutiny by attorney-client privilege. And that means shit is way, way worse you realize and you need to start thinking about protecting yourself.

But they're in a full panic because any competent incident responder would document how this incident was a failure of leadership, and this has to be prevented at any cost. Their individual

Just saw someone loudly proclaim "BONKWAVE > DONKWAVE" , and....

Look, you know you've got genre homework ahead of you when you look up some music term you've never heard of and find an argument that it's _way, way better_ than this _other_, music genre you've never heard of.

Much gratitude to @ErickaSimone for periodically reminding us that we are actually living in a miraculous golden age of music that's bigger and weirder than you think.

Anyway here you go: music.bonkwave.org/the-four-se

Ever had that feeling in your stomach you get when you’re trying to root-cause-and-restore some outage and find out that the backups for your failed service are on the same physical strata as the service itself?

Well, funny story but Binance’s emergency fund seems to also be held in cryptocurrencies.

Maybe 25 years ago now, I remember Don Knuth writing about withdrawing to retool some hashing algorithm he'd been working on, explaining that while all their testing appeared to produce a promisingly uniform randomness, somebody clever had using tried using a linear sequence of integer seeds - 0,1,2,3,4.... that in those conditions the hash showed alarming signs of being very nonrandom, but nobody had thought to test it like that before.

Thinking about that a lot this week. For some reason.

RE: floss.social/@josch/1175093328

I think the middle ground "maybe LLMs" choice was quietly, secretly rooted in a hidden contempt for other people's work, particularly anyone "not technical". No LLMs for code, we'd never use LLMs for something that important obviously, but for _documentation_ sure. For _graphics_, for _art_, obviously. Those things aren't _code_, you see, they're not _important_.

But, it turns out they are important. And they make it clear who and what you're willing to sacrifice, so you can feel important.

@emma @be Indeed I was afraid of this to happen when the GR got discussed. There were many people whom I highly respect (and still highly respect) who were convinced that there were indeed roughly 3 choices: "no LLMs", "maybe LLMs" and "always LLMs". Unfortunately, those who said that the "maybe LLMs" choice was the same as the "always LLM" choice seem to be receiving evidence that they might've been right all along and in fact there were only 2 choices... @cwebber

(Me, whispering: Maybe the reason PHP is everywhere and in everything is that ease of use, ease of modification and ease of deployment are actually good things and making easy, fun things safe is way, way more important to real world practices and uptake than trying to graft ease of use and fun onto guarantees of safety that computing has never been willing, much less able, to really guarantee anyway.)
