I #Selfhost my email server (that handles my 20+ domains) since almost 20 years now, currently on a cheap virtual machine running Linux, with 1 CPU core, 2G of RAM, 40G hard drive and unlimited network traffic which costs me less than €5/month.

Many people keep on telling me that running your own email server is more or less impossible. I simply don't listen to them.

I explained my setup in a blog series starting at jan.wildeboer.net/2022/08/Emai

@jwildeboer @homelab You are so courageous!

What is your experience with ending up in spam?

Also, the economical cost is quite cheap, but how about maintenance time?

Lastly: have you considered switching to Stalwart by @stalwartlabs?

Stalwart Stalwart Mail & Collaboration Server Open-source mail and collaboration server with JMAP, IMAP4, POP3, SMTP, CalDAV, CardDAV and WebDAV support. Written in Rust, designed to be secure, scalable, and easy to operate.

Spam: no problem. I get maybe 5-10/month, which result in reporting them via Spamcop or adding the sending server to my blocklist.

Maintenance time: As I explained in the first reply, maybe 1-2 hours per month.

Stalwart: No, I stick with my very basic dovecot and postfix setup. Nothing more needed and keeping it simple helps me to make sure I understand all moving parts and am not dependent on someone else.

@jwildeboer @tommi @homelab @stalwartlabs Pretty sure they meant emails you send ending up in spam for other people who use the big providers.

if you register your domain/server with google & microsoft, most of the time deliverability isn't a problem. yahoo goes back and forth on being difficult.

i get email to all 3 pretty reliably. every so often, mail i sent goes into spam but if the user marks as "not spam", that usually cures the problem.

for software, doing postfix and dovecot. i also do postgrey, which is occasionally annoying but spamhaus RBL and postgrey probably eliminate 2/3s of incoming spam before it even gets delivered to my server.

SPF/DMARC are a one time DNS update and opendkim does dkim painlessly. (i also do my own DNS).

one other surprise. if you're doing a lot of email to/from .DE, some german providers are very fussy when dealing with spam/blocks that you must have a web site with contact info. i don't have a web site listed and i haven't had a problem but a mail operator mailing list i'm on does have folks sometimes mention hitting this.
