@timbray Rumor (and reality, so far) is that M6 will be the ONLY “6”-series M chip, so no M6 Pro, M6 Max, and M6 Ultra. Apple is skipping straight to the M7 generation.

(Also, the M4 series never had an “Ultra” chip.)

So, a plain M6 is much smaller/weaker than an M5 Pro, let alone an M5 Max or Ultra.

But the M6 does have 2x the “Neural engines” of the M5 Pro and M5 Max, so it might be able to win a very specifically designed benchmark on that.

@timbray Apple’s ”M” chips come in multiple sizes for (most) generations. (Replace n with 1-6.)

* Mn - The plain, no-suffix M chip. This is the smallest and cheapest, with the narrowest busses and the least cores, etc.

* Mn Pro - The next size up: more cores, wider busses, more PCIe lanes, etc.

* Mn Max - The biggest “single chip” M chip (though the M5 Max does use separate CPU and GPU dies now).

* Mn Ultra - Two Mn Max chips stuck together, so double everything the Max has.

This is FASCINATING. Researchers were able to pin down the cause of measurable global 60 second power spikes to software that does regular checks on the minute mark. They found large scale battery installations as one major cause, but obviously this is true for any other computerized system that does cron jobs and has a synchronized clock. As weird as it sounds, adding random 0-59.999s delays to cron jobs in Linux distributions and other software would actually help the power grid.

Mystery of 60-Second Fluctuations in Power Grids Solved Why do our grids show a brief spike in electricity demand every minute? A team led by Dirk Witthaut from Forschungszentrum Jülich has now demonstrated that this is due to regular power checks carried out by large-scale battery storage systems. These findings could help to make our electricity supply more robust, as the team reports in an article published in Nature Energy.

@pfernandes I think it’s very obvious, and when text passes through it, even moreso.

@xwq Sure…but you should still watch out when crossing the street.

@pfernandes That matte screen layer doesn’t cover the camera at all. It has a circular hole punched in it for the camera to see through. It’s that hole in the matte layer that is visible even when the screen is turned off.

BeOS support in Infinite Mac is officially released: infinitemac.org/?filter=beos

blog.persistent.info/2026/10/i has more details - this didn't involve a new emulator, but it did uncover some unhandled edge cases in DingusPPC and some side quests to get software loaded.
