this video of a guy youtube.com/watch?v=gQRmSlcTq9c writing basic linux file utils in C by hand without using AI (mocked of course on HN) confirms some ideas I have about "programming" for a while now (and it explains to me why I don't even THINK about using LLM for writing documentation)

Programming like practically all things I do are imho similar to a "craft" consisting of two things: knowledge about the technology and skillfull execution of "the craft" -->

so "execution" of the craft isn't even good - I've watched a bunch of really good C/other languages hackers here and there and they simply (yes I'm saying it out loud) know how to "type" the respective language fluently. IMHO this is a fundamental part of the "execution" of a craft where you really need to know how to DO "the thing".

I'm a fluent writer in 2 languages, I knit and do other crafty stuff so if I'd have to teach programming: "execution of the craft" is pretty fundamental.

knowledge of "the technology" is the other half - it's not enough to type C code, you need to know how to use the related technology and how to build "an architecture".

in similar vain you need to learn what good writing is, how to knit pattern X, or how sourdough bread baking really works (beyond knowing how to knead dough) and that's IMHO still learned by reading about it, understanding it, talking with others about it, chewing on it and iterating over it "until you've found your style"
