garden news: someone fucking un-mulched one of the gardens for some reason so now I have to go re-mulch it (hopefully they haven't un-mulched the other garden in the meanwhile)

THINGS cost MONEY and take TIME and ENERGY to transport and grow/decompose so if people would just stop throwing out the THINGS that would be great

Weird. I'll never understand people who want bare dirt. I have a neighbor who cuts edges of the beds for perfectly crisp lines, and it's either dry dirt or mud. Not a single fallen leaf or twig.

@dillyd @nev My in-laws are like this.... bare dirt, can't have any leaves anywhere. My son moved over there and they moved to a retirement "villa", and finally managed to get a couple of loads of mulch at least under the fruit trees, which are SO MUCH HAPPIER. I don't understand where the obsession to remove all leaves/organic matter/etc. comes from.

@ai6yr @dillyd @nev In our neighborhood, it's the mow-and-blow guys. When I had my trees trimmed last fall, the crew "cleaned up" by removing a year's worth of treasured mulch/leaf mold from my beds in the front yard. I wasn't happy--and they were astonished because that's what the customers always want: not a single leaf on the ground.

@LPerry2 @ai6yr @dillyd one time a landscaper or whatever was using a leaf blower on my street and someone from another house came out to very angrily and profanely berate them. while I cannot (publicly) condone such behaviour I entirely understand the reaction

there's a house near me that always has a perfectly leafless yard. if the owner is ever out while i'm passing by, i'm not gonna be able to resist the impulse to offer my condolences (and maybe some dead leaves or native plant seeds)

When we moved in to this house, the next door neighbor was complaining to us about how the previous owners didn't take care of the lawn. "There are people who like that, but it's not what I'd call a lawn." We smiled politely and proceeded to make it ten times wilder.
