you ever write code so inefficient you have to start complaining about the global allocation of RAM

It's No AO3 November, so this month we're recommending fanworks hosted somewhere other than AO3. #fandom #recs #AO3down fancake.dreamwidth.org/2483693

We laughed way too much to this one because my wife is a minister and the music this is based on comes from a hymn she picks not infrequently during service

I've been playing Cursed Castilla EX in the little free time I have and - true to its Ghost 'n' Goblins roots - this game is stupidly hard. I already died 72 times on the third level, 64 fighting against the boss. There's 8 levels IIUC, I'll never finish it. But it's an absolute blast.

knowledge of "the technology" is the other half - it's not enough to type C code, you need to know how to use the related technology and how to build "an architecture".

in similar vain you need to learn what good writing is, how to knit pattern X, or how sourdough bread baking really works (beyond knowing how to knead dough) and that's IMHO still learned by reading about it, understanding it, talking with others about it, chewing on it and iterating over it "until you've found your style"

@kellay this brings me so much joy. My father worked on two Shuttle missions and brought us to watch both launches (Atlantis and Columbia) and they remain some of my most vivid childhood memories

I thought of making something orange for Halloween, and what's more orange than a shuttle's fuel tank...
Happy Halloween everyone!!!

There is no such thing as "ethically using AI". AI is trained on stolen data. AI is destroying the environment and communities. AI is making us stupid. Use AI if you want, just don't pretend you're doing it in ethical way.

@dougbinks this is one of those cases where you can replace the word "LLM" with "cocaine" and it still works perfectly

@gombang @collectifission I recently did an install on a 14yo T420. If you stick to mostly using binary packages you should be fine even on a pretty slow machine: mas.to/@gabrielesvelto/1167559

mas.to Gabriele Svelto (@gabrielesvelto@mas.to) As a side note to this: yes, I did a Gentoo install on a 14 years old dual-core laptop. It took me a couple of hours at most to get it booting into the console with network support enabled. I spent most of that time fooling around with the full disk encryption though, you can probably do a full desktop environment installation in under three hours on that kind of hardware by leveraging binary pack

Motorola 68010 is an interesting CPU. It has a 2-instruction cache for a specific opcode: DBcc. When a cacheable 2-byte instruction is combined with DBcc that loops back to this instruction, the 68010 automatically enters a loop mode. In this mode, the instructions don't need to be fetched, leading to a performance boost over the 68000.

As a practical example, I came up with this strlen() implementation that (as far as I can tell) is the fastest way strlen() can be implemented on a 68010 CPU.

One thing that we lost with the demise of Maemo and Nokia’s phone business is touch keyboard design by designers who have first-hand experience of writing more than one Latin-script language every day.

Switching the keyboard layout makes sense when switching language also switches script. But I want the Finnish touch targets to stay in the same positions for English.

And then there’s the nonsense seen in this screenshot: Someone thought I should use AZERTY if I want to translate from French.

@benjamineskola @funkylab @hzulla maybe I'm off the mark here but cron implementations have always honored the RANDOM_DELAY env variable and it's always been recommended to set it to a non-zero value. IIRC systemd timers also honor it but I don't know if it's set by default or not.
