Here, I made a helpful image while waiting for trick-or-treaters. Now at long last you can be pedantic online!

A # symbol, labeled: “This is not a hashtag.” A # is called a hash, number sign, pound sign, or octothorp. In “#punctuation,” the # is a hash symbol, and “punctuation” is a tag: a word used for categorizing and discovering digital content. “hash” + “tag” = “hashtag”
