Today, my friends from Mexico stopped by to pick up the marigolds that I had for them. Marigolds are the traditional flower for decorating the home altar (ofrenda) for remembering the deceased.

A nice surprise was that they dropped off some homemade “pan de muerto” (bread of the dead). It’s a sweet bread decorated with crossed “bones” made of pieces of dough.

Three plastic grocery store bags filled with large bright orange flowers. The flowers are still attached to a few inches of stem with green leaves. Three round sweet breads on a large dinner plate. The bread is a rich tan color with a sheen (from egg?). The top of each bread has a raised cross or X formed from bread dough.

What a very fast fall here. Looks like we lost a lot of leaves already, noting I am farther back taking the shot here. Color is fading fast.

I love this little tree.

I posted it last year when everything else was bare and it was a flaming redhead. Now we’re clearly past peak and many trees are looking more leafless than not, and this tough little bitch is just getting going.

A beautiful, shapely little tree with very red leaves at the top and mostly green leaves at the bottom (but that dark green with red beginning to peak through), standing against a sky of absurd crystalline blue. A fairly nice brick apartment building to the left and a white car dappled by its shade.

My god what a day.

As I've said before, no one moves to Boston for the weather. But every once in a while it pulls out all the stops with a glorious fall day like today. It's even maybe a little warmer than would be perfect for me but it's also HECKIN wimdy and what would be an icy blast on a seasonable day becomes a refreshing breeze. I just walked to work and it's so good. Also passed a tree so good it's gonna get its own post. 10/10 weather day.

These lone trash cans have dotted the high desert landscape of Nevada for decades. While on a family roadtrip in the '60s, we were crossing Nevada when my parents decided to stop at one of these pullouts & stretch their legs. After a few minutes one of my parents said, "Shh, listen to how quiet it is." I listened & thought, so that is what quiet sounds like? Only decades later did I learned that tinnitus sounds like cicadas buzzing. So for decades I thought quiet was the buzz of tinnitus. 🫤

A variant on a Nessie cocktail garnish I invented many years ago, if it's of use to anyone at this time of year. No trick, just cut whatever gummie and push either side onto the dry glass.
(Nessie went in and out several times, it looked pretty cool.)
